Windows Applications That I Use.

December 28th, 2011

This was a post that was in inside – n – outside. Think that can be posted here as well.

I work in the software Quality assurance field, and here are the Windows Applications I can’t live without.(Doesn’t involve the software testing apps – that list is endless). I use 3 windows OS: Win XP / Vista/ Win 7. These must have applications(atleast for me) are mostly free and open source which are sure to work in all the three OS. Check them out.

1. Notepad++:  free as in both “free speech” and “free beer”
- The replacement for notepad, having advance features, and easy to use with a tabbed interface. It helps me a lot in writing my technical blog, as well as do some basic programming as well.
More info in Notepad++ website

2. Paint.Net :
- Replacement for the Paint in Windows (the MSPaint in windows 7 is more powerful than the one in other versions like xp and vista). This application can handle layers, and can do almost all the adjustments that are needed for your small time picture editing needs.
More info in Paint.Net website

3. Open Office :
- Open Office(earlier with Sun, now with Oracle after the acquisition) is an open source office applications having almost all the capabilities of of MS Office. A true MS Office replacement and nifty to work with!
More info in Open Office website

4. Foxit reader :
- I use this instead of Adobe Acrobat reader to view *.pdf(Portable Document Format) files. Light to the memory, and easy to use.

5. Browsers – FireFox/ Chrome :
- Firefox is the thing with fire in it’s stomache and can be claimed as the IE killer – Open source, fast(except may be because of some scripts), and almost crash free. Chrome from Google is also reliable in most of the cases.
FIrefox and Chrome can be obtained from their websites.

Antivirus – MSE

December 27th, 2011

I was using AVG as my antivirus. And off late I’ve noticed that my laptops were crawling. AVG was sucking the juice out of the memory installed. Then I went on for a search. A search for better antivirus.
Now I’m using MSE(Microsoft Security Essentials). Less load, and gets hold of almost all the threats. (I Even tried with AVG and MSE Side by side and MSE was able to identify many threats)

Pros
Less load
Strong AV Definition

Cons
Irritating popups [ :) ]

Ps. You can install one only if you are using genuine windows…

NOKIA PHONES 1100, 1110 and E52

NOKIA Phones

I have an E52 from Nokia, a no nonsense , non qwerty, non touch smart phone from Nokia. Unfortunately last few months were not good for the relation ship between me and my E52. It started to show signs of age, display gets off occasionally, not able to charge the Phone through USB Port. and then I read some figures on the mobile sales.

This year, the smart phone market grow around 10 percentage and Nokia showed a de- growth of 20 percentage. Both Apple and Samsung over took Nokia in this segment(Nokia was the leader for the last 15 years.).

I was not amazed to see that.. especially when the E52 is broken before an year and the older non smart phone models like 1100 from Nokia and 1110 from Nokia are still working even after 8 years and 5 years of usage.
